What is an Index?

A Single Trade on an
Entire Stock Market

A stock market index is a measurement of the performance of a selected group of stocks. Rather than buying individual company shares, trading an index gives you exposure to the collective movement of an entire market or sector in a single position.

For example, the S&P 500 tracks the 500 largest publicly listed US companies. When you trade the S&P 500 CFD, you're effectively speculating on whether the overall US stock market will rise or fall — without needing to buy all 500 shares individually.

GBH Markets offers index trading as Contracts for Difference (CFDs), meaning you can go long (buy) if you believe the index will rise, or go short (sell) if you believe it will fall — with leverage to amplify both your potential gains and losses.

Why Trade Indices

6 Reasons to Trade
Indices with GBH

Instant Global Diversification
One trade gives you exposure to an entire economy's stock market. Buy the S&P 500 and you're positioned across Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and 497 other major companies simultaneously.
Trade Long or Short
CFD index trading lets you profit from falling markets just as easily as rising ones. Sell the Nasdaq short if you expect a correction. There's no restriction on short positions at GBH Markets.
Leverage up to 100:1
Control a $100,000 S&P 500 position with just $1,000 margin at 100:1 leverage. Amplify your market exposure while keeping your capital requirements low. Leverage increases both gains and losses.
No Share Ownership Required
CFD trading means you never own the underlying index shares. No stamp duty, no settlement delays, no corporate action complications. Pure price speculation with no physical delivery.
Extended Trading Hours
GBH Markets offers index CFDs with extended hours — including pre-market and after-hours pricing on US indices. React to earnings reports and economic data released outside regular exchange hours.
Islamic Swap-Free Available
All index CFDs are available on our Islamic swap-free accounts. No overnight interest charges on any index position, at no extra cost. Available to all Muslim clients on request.

Risk Warning: Index CFDs are leveraged products. A 1% move in the S&P 500 with 100:1 leverage equals a 100% move in your margin. You can lose your entire investment on a single trade. GBH Markets strongly recommends using stop-loss orders on all index positions and never risking more than 2% of account equity on any single trade.

Index Composition

What's Inside
the S&P 500?

Understanding what drives an index helps you trade it better. The S&P 500 is dominated by technology and consumer companies — here's the approximate top weighting breakdown.

1
Market Cap Weighting
Most major indices are weighted by market capitalisation — larger companies have more influence. Apple's 7% weighting means a 1% Apple move shifts the S&P 500 by 0.07%.
2
Index Rebalancing
Indices are rebalanced periodically — typically quarterly. Companies can be added or removed based on market cap, liquidity, and sector criteria. GBH adjusts CFD pricing accordingly.
3
Dividend Adjustments
When stocks within an index pay dividends, index CFD holders receive cash adjustments. If you hold a long position, you receive the dividend equivalent. Short positions are debited.

FAQ

Index Trading Questions

What is an index CFD and how does it differ from buying the index?
An index CFD is a derivative product that tracks the price of a stock market index without requiring you to own the underlying shares. Unlike ETFs or index funds, CFDs: (1) allow leverage so you can control larger positions with less capital, (2) allow short selling so you can profit from falling markets, (3) have no stamp duty or share transaction costs, and (4) provide no voting rights or dividend ownership. CFDs are for speculation — not long-term investment.
Do index CFDs expire?
No. GBH Markets offers cash (rolling) index CFDs with no expiry date. You can hold positions for as long as you choose — overnight swap fees apply unless you hold an Islamic swap-free account. This differs from futures-based index products which have fixed quarterly expiry dates.
Can I trade US indices outside of US market hours?
Yes. GBH Markets' US index CFDs (S&P 500, Dow Jones, Nasdaq) are available nearly 24 hours a day from Sunday 23:00 GMT to Friday 22:00 GMT, with only a one-hour daily maintenance break from 22:00–23:00 GMT. This allows MENA traders to react to US corporate earnings, Fed announcements, and economic data at any time during the trading week.
How are dividends handled on index CFDs?
When companies within an index pay dividends, the index price adjusts downward on the ex-dividend date. GBH Markets credits long position holders with an equivalent cash adjustment and debits short position holders. This means your overall position value is unchanged by the dividend event itself, though the index price will drop at the open on the ex-dividend date.
What moves stock indices?
Major index price drivers include: (1) Central bank interest rate decisions — rate cuts are generally bullish for indices; (2) Corporate earnings reports from major index constituents; (3) Macroeconomic data — US NFP, GDP, CPI inflation; (4) Geopolitical events — wars, elections, trade disputes; (5) Currency movements — a weak USD is often positive for US multinationals; (6) Sector-specific news — especially technology for Nasdaq. Understanding these drivers is fundamental to index trading.
What is the minimum trade size for indices?
The minimum trade size for index CFDs is 0.1 lots (micro lot). For the S&P 500 at 5,234 points, 0.1 lots represents a notional value of $523. With 100:1 leverage, the margin required is just $5.23. This makes index CFD trading accessible even with small account balances, though we strongly recommend using appropriate position sizing and risk management.
Which index is best for MENA traders?
Many MENA traders focus on the S&P 500 (US500) and Nasdaq 100 (US100) due to their high liquidity, tight spreads, and near-24-hour availability — making them tradeable during MENA business hours. The DAX 40 (GER40) is also popular as it is active during the morning session which overlaps with Gulf business hours (09:00 GMT onwards). The VIX volatility index is popular with more experienced traders as a hedge against market uncertainty.
